Passengers travelled from far and wide to Southampton to travel on RMS Titanic but in April of 1912 she sank taking some of the passengers and crew with her. Many on board were from Southampton and you can trace their footsteps throughout the city. This heritage is celebrated through our memorials and annual events.

Southampton’s direct involvement with the slave trade was limited. There is evidence to show that there were slaves and indentured labour in the city, but much of the trade related to the business benefit of slavery which included sugar and chocolate.
