Now playing: The Old Town is part of Southampton’s rich allure

Southampton’s Old Town has more hidden treasures than many other cities can boast. Although much of it bears the scars of war the old medieval city remains amazingly intact. This part of the city has been home to Jane Austen, played host to Shakespeare and his performers and been visited by many a king and queen. The council is restoring and investing in the Old Town which is now attracting new restaurants and bistros, huge private investment like the £4 million refurbishment of the Dolphin Hotel and the growth of modern apartments in the French Quarter. The much anticipated £5.4 million restoration of the Tudor House and Gardens will be completed summer 2011. The Old Town is now a vibrant quarter based on its own identity.
